It critically analyses the ways in which cultural, religious, political, and economic frameworks have entrenched patriarchy while concurrently facilitating avenues for change and opposition. During the early Vedic period, women experienced a degree of autonomy and spiritual agency; however, later epochsânamely the Puranic, Islamic, and colonial periodsâsaw the entrenchment of gender hierarchies, the relegation of women to domestic roles, and the perpetuation of male supremacy through religious texts and traditions. The research emphasises reform movements, including Buddhism and the Bhakti tradition, as well as socio-legal interventions by Indian reformers and female activists in the 19th and 20th centuries. It looks at how policies changed after independence via Five-Year Plans and ideas like Welfare, Women in Development (WID), and Gender and Development (GAD), leading up to tactics centred on empowerment. The essay contends that, while considerable progress in legal, educational, and institutional domains, persistent patriarchal practices continue to subvert women's rights, especially among marginalised communities. Utilising historical records, feminist historiography, and policy papers, the research highlights the enduring dichotomy of empowerment and oppression, promoting a continuous, integrative, and inclusive strategy for attaining authentic gender equality in India.
